Thunderbirds Contest Husky Classic

A small group of Thunderbird middle distance runners competed at the University of Washington in Seattle this past weekend. Rachel Cliff opened her 2014 season with a 16:11.59 clocking in the 5000m, placing 13th. Kapil Anand contested the 600m and came away with a personal best time of 1:28.38. Max Trummer ran an indoor personal best of 1:57.38 in the 800m. This will set Max up very well for his final high school track season. Audrey Warner and Calli Charlton raced the 3000m. In her first ever indoor competition, Audrey ran 10:38.39 and Calli followed closely behind in 10:44.91. Both Audrey and Calli are preparing diligently for the 3000m at the BC High School Championships and this meet was a significant part of their preparations. Congratulation to all of these athletes for some strong early season results!

Harry Jerome proves fruitful for the Thunderbirds

On Saturday, almost 50 Thunderbirds stepped on the track for the first time this season, to test themselves against other top clubs in the province.  The Harry Jerome Indoor meet proved to be another success and we are happy to report there were plenty of fantastic results from our club members.

In the power/speed group, Matt Chan led with the best male performance of the group with his 3rd place finish in the 60m, with a time of 7.27s, only 1/100th off his personal best.  Sophie Pauls led the way on the female side with a great start to her season, with a jump of 1.60m in high jump.

Other notable performances include, Danielle Miller (Midget Girls 300m – 46.50s, 60m – 8.57s), Sophia Pelayo Mazzone (Midget Girls 60m – 8.44s), Hayley Madden (Youth Girls 300m – 45. 52s) and Danielle Douglas (Open Women’s 300m – 42.35s).

The Thunderbirds middle distance group was also well represented. Max Trummer and Roberto Pelayo Mazzone led the way with first place performances. Max won the 1500m in 4:19.33 and Roberto won the 1000m in 2:51.55. Calli Charlton (1500m - 5:07.27), Leiah Kirsh (1200m - 4:00.06), and Meghan Fjell (1000m - 3:35.95) all grabbed runner up positions with Meghan doubling back to capture third place in the 600m (1:57.99). Matthew Taylor (1000m - 2:51.89), Sydney Desbrisay (1000m - 3:42.48) and Ben Paetzel (1200m - 3:57.61) also finished third in their events. Sydney also placed 4th in the 600m (2:03.42). Other Thunderbird middle distance athletes in action were Manon Plouvier (1200m - 4:30.76) and Sarah Jane Mah (1000m - 3:47.63; 1200m - 4:41.26).

Eight athletes from the JD ranks participated; all performing well in their first ever indoor meet and showed great team spirit. Most notable performance wise was the win in the 12&13 year old girls 300 by Sophie Morris in 48.91 and the third place by Hanna Pawlik in the 10 & 11 60m in 9.30. Sophie Forsyth just missed a medal in the 600m for 10&11 year olds, and Lola Hopper narrowly missed the final in the 60m.

Congrats to all those that competed.  This was a great benchmark meet to see where everyone was.  We now know what needs to be worked on, in order to improve.
